Dr Eddy C FONG, GBS, JP
Chairman of Council, 2009–2016
I joined the Council of The Open University of Hong Kong (OUHK) in 2003 and took up its Chairmanship from 2009 to 2016. Back in 2003, the Institution was focusing in playing its essential role of broadening educational opportunities for working adults through distance learning with its full-time programmes still at the early stage. Leveraging on the collective effort and dedication of all members of the University in promoting its full-time programmes, the OUHK has evolved over the years to become a full-fledged university today. Its teaching quality has been widely recognized by the Government and the community, resulting in a significant surge in student population. It is truly amazing to witness what this young university has accomplished in just three decades.
During my years at the OUHK, it was indeed my great pleasure to have taken part in a number of momentous developments which include the relocation of the Li Ka Shing Institute of Professional and Continuing Education (LiPACE) from Sheung Wan to the Kwai Hing Learning Centre, the Campus Phase II development project and the construction of the Jockey Club Campus. All these developments have helped to create a better learning environment for thestudents.
On the auspicious occasion of the 30th anniversary of the OUHK, I would like to offer my warmest congratulations to the University for reaching this important milestone. I am confident that under the leadership of the current Council and Management, the University will continue to thrive and excel, nourish even more new talents for our society, and advance to its next level of excellence in the years to come.
